Microsoft Bing was a part of Microsoft’s effort to rebrand its search engine--Live Search—and the tools that came with it. Primarily a search engine, the platform allows users to search for content related to videos, maps, shopping, images, and news. The platform is comprised of interface features that include scenes of daily life that change and the ability to connect to MSN, Office Online, and Outlook, and navigation panes.
The search engine also provides visitors with video thumbnail previews, video searches, and advanced filters or query operators. Users also have access to instant answers to questions on a range of topics, i.e. sports, in addition to local information (traffic).
Bing, named for the sound that one expects to hear upon making a discovery, originated from MSN Search, Windows Live Search, and then Live Search. Bing was introduced to the public on June 3, 2009, in San Diego at the All Things Digital Conference—its most notable features included query suggestions as a part of the search and a list of relate searches. A month later, Microsoft would collaborate with Yahoo! to power the search engine’s platform. This deal would be modified in 2015 when Yahoo would only use Bing to power the majority of its searches.
In 2011, Bing’s developers worked to add a faster indexing service called Tiger that would deliver more accurate, relevant searches. A year later, Bing was redesigned with features that included “Sidebar,” a place where users can search social networks for information. The platform would evolve to include BitFunnel search engine algorithm were made open source in 2016.
