The Cowboy Channel is cable channel that features Western and rodeo sports, in addition to playing reruns. The first 24-hour television channel dedicated to featuring Western sports and lifestyle with content that includes barrel racing, ProRodeo, bull riding, roping, reining, barrel racing, and other western-type sports, fashion and music. The channel, which has viewership of 42 million, also hosts live coverage of events featuring some of the world’s toughest (and most talented) cowboys and cowgirls.
The Cowboy Channel’s history begins in 1979 as the National Christian Network, but it was FamilyNet when Jerry Falwell took ownership in 1988. The network would change hands in 2007 when InTouch Ministries purchased it and then again in 2008 when ComStar Media Fund acquired it. As FamilyNet, it operated FamilyNet Radio 161, a full-time Christian talk channel that was broadcasted from Sirius Satellite Radio and showed The Bob Newhart Show, Newhart, and Mr. Belvedere.
By 2012, Rural TV (owned by Rural Media) purchased FamilyNet and broadcasted all-trading day farm and market news. FamilyNet remained separate from Rural Media’s other holdings, and in September 2014, re-established its programming by featuring classic television programming and films while saving religious programming for Sunday.
It would not be until 2017 that FamilyNet would be rebranded as the Cowboy Channel. As the Cowboy Channel, the programming focused on Western sports and rodeo events. The channel first featured encore programming from RFD-TV (sister channel), programs such as The American Rodeo, the Professional Bull Riders, and the Calgary Stampede.
The Cowboy Channel has a multi-year agreement with the Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association to show their major events beginning in 2020. Under Rural Media ownership, the channel also ended carriage agreements with over-the-air broadcasters, making the channel a pay-TV channel. The channel also was launched in Canada in 2020.
Cowboy Channel has everything for the Western fanatic, live rodeos and other fare with occasional reruns from the distant past. Based in Nashville, Tennessee, The Cowboy Channel is broadcasted to millions of viewers throughout the US 24 hours a day. Get your business on Cowboy Channel by sending a press release.
