About Google News

As of 2020, Google News was considered the top news aggregator, compiling news articles that appear within the past 30 days. The site indexes thousands of online news sites in 35 languages from numerous publishers and magazines. The company has come a long way since releasing a beta format in September 2002 and launching an app in January 2006.

In addition to offering Google News as an app, last year, the news aggregator announced that it would add a new feature to its news format. Google News plans to work with publishers to create Showcases, which are cards that publishers can make bespoke to match various layouts, for example, a collection of related articles, key bullet points, or a timeline of events. Google budgeted $1 billion to go toward the project that will be a coordinated effort among 200 publishers located in Germany, Brazil, Canada, Argentina, the UK, and Australia.

Google News History

September 11, 2001 one was the inspiration for creating Google News. Its founder, Krishna Barat, created the platform so that he could remain abreast of events as they unfolded. Barat started the news website by compiling 25,000 news sites, and by January 2006, the company launched its app.

As the platform grew and more readers visited the site, Google News changed its first-click free option in December 2009, which previously allowed readers to find and read articles behind a paywall the first time and then any time after that the rates were set by the publisher. After December 1, however, readers could access five articles before they had to pay to read, but this amount was changed to three articles in 2015.

Over the years, Google has introduced new strategies to attract readers including Google News Badges which ended in 2012 and now the Showcases. The site has gone through two layout and page designs to make the platform easier to navigate and more accessible, giving consumers more control. The search tools menu was replaced by a card format that groups related news stories.

Google News provides readers a wealth of information in aggregate news form. Since its inception after 2001, Google News has offered readers the ability to access thousands of news stories in 35 languages, in addition to allowing them more control of what stories are a priority to them.
