About Morning News

Blackfoot is a small town numbering close to the 12,000 mark as of the last census. However, while it does not have the imposing impression of the country’s larger cities, it holds an importance of its own. The country is indebted to this small city with a major contribution to the American palate. Whether it is the simple French fry, a potato salad, or Mom’s best mashed potatoes, they more than likely got their start here in Blackfoot, the “Potato Capital the World.”

Spuds are not the only thing on the menu, though, as the city’s Morning News newspaper provides readers with enough sustenance to get their day going. The paper publishes, every day except on Sundays, articles related to local news, sports, and entertainment. Readers can pick up a print copy or visit am-news.com to catch up on previous stories.

Morning History

The paper begins in 1904 as the Idaho Republican founded by Byrd Trego. One of the paper’s central missions was to provide readers with a voice that was above partisanship. The paper was a weekly published on Friday covering Blackfoot events, especially agriculture.

The paper was successful in capturing readers and went onto replace the town’s leading paper and to absorb another. By 1917, the paper moved from publishing only once a week to publishing semi-weekly on Monday and Friday. After WWI, the paper’s readership increased and the paper published tri-weekly in 1920 and then went back to publishing only once a week in 1922.

Trego remained as head of the paper until 1927 when the paper changed its name to the Daily Republican, publishing every day except Sunday. However, this name would be short-lived in that the paper swapped out “republican” for “bulletin” and became the Daily Bulletin. Under this name, the paper published every day except Sunday until 1946 when it only published week days (Monday-Friday).

This lasted until the paper changed names and became the Blackfoot News in 1960, reverting back to publishing every day except Sunday. In 1981, the paper changed its title to the Morning News of Southeastern Idaho while remaining on the same publishing schedule. The paper would finally become the Morning News two years later in 1983 when D.R. Brown took over as publisher. Today, the paper currently covers news in the city and in Bingham County and has a circulation of approximately 4000 copies. The Morning News is currently owned Horizon Publishing, Inc.
