The town’s name has its origins in the Salish word “snpintkn,” which loosely translates into a place where people live year-round but more literally means a place to stay forever. The city is very similar to many found in the Pacific Northwest, and while its beauty rivals few other rustic towns, it would not experience substantial growth and prosperity until after WWII when construction on the Okanagan River and other projects brought new opportunity. Today, the community has settled into a comfortable existence with the wine industry and revitalization efforts in some of the older neighborhoods taking priority.
For over 100 years, the Penticton Herald has chronicled the lives and events of its residents. The paper covers local news, sports, business, opinion pieces, and community events. Residents can catch up on the news every day except Sunday in print or online at pentictonherald.ca.
The paper started as the Penticton Press in 1906 and would cost readers only one dollar to subscribe for just a year. Those who subscribed could pour over the ragged, yellow pages every Saturday to read local events. When the paper changed its name in 1910 to the Penticton Herald and began to publish three times a week, it continued to provide readers a glimpse into their world as the town grew and prospered.
In 1957, the paper picked up two more days and ran this way until 1989 when it added Saturday as well. The Saturday edition would be named the Okanagan and published jointly with another Kelowna paper, the Daily Courier. Today, the paper publishes the Herald Extra, Okanagan Valley TV Guide, and Real Estate and is owned by Continental Newspapers Canada, Ltd.
