About The Punxsutawney Spirit

Surprisingly, more people visit this town to hear Punxsutawney Phil’s weather predictions for the upcoming spring than actual residents. Before being popularized by the most famous groundhog in the United States, the town historically was a farming town that grew into mining, glassworks, ironworks, feed, flour, and silk shops industries, in addition to other smaller industries. Today, the town has become somewhat of a landmark in the state due to the film Groundhog Day and notable people who hail from the town.

For more than 140 years, The Punxsutawney Spirit has chronicled the town’s growth. Today, the paper provides subscribers with local and business news, in addition to sports and entertainment. The paper is published every day, except on Sunday, and can be accessed online at punxsutawneyspirit.com.

The Punxsutawney Spirit History

While settlers lived in the area as early as the late 1700s, it would be close to a hundred years before the paper would come into fruition. Some sources say that the paper is the only one in Jefferson County, Pennsylvania, and that it is rooted in another paper called the Mahoning Valley Spirit, which was launched in 1873. The paper ran for almost three years before changing its name to The Punxsutawney Spirit.

For 145 years, the paper has chronicled both local and business events of those who live in the town. While in earlier incarnations the paper published stories on both local and world news, today the paper provides local and business news. The paper also provides subscribers with information typical of local newspapers, i.e. classifieds and entertainment sections.

The Punxsutawney Spirit allows residents in Jefferson County to stay plugged into news related to the little town with a great reputation.
